Genre Research Romance

The first genre we chose to research was romance. Typically, in romance films there are many different camera angles, editing, and sounds. I researched three different movies with the genre of romance, Twilight, After, and Adrift. In every movie, there is some type of downfall where something goes wrong between the main characters who are in the relationship. In romance movies the most used camera angles were close-ups, shoulder level shots, long shots, and eye level shots. For the close ups, it causes a more dramatic effect for viewers to see a more emotional view behind the eyes of the actors, then with shoulder level shots, it gives a better view of body language and facial movements so that the viewers can establish an idea of what the actors are feeling. In the long shots, this showed the backgrounds of the characters and what settings they were in so the viewer can get a better understanding of what's going on, and lastly the eye level shots provide a deep connection to the viewers on the fire behind the emotions being portrayed in the scene. The editing in romance movies typically change often depending on what is going on with the movie, as for the beginning in which typically the characters haven't met, the editing is very slow and there are smooth transitions between scenes. As the characters meet and problems begin to arise, the editing goes from slow to fast to provide tension and drama. One thing I've noticed with the editing in romance movies was the constant voiceovers in these movies, one of the characters is either narrating, providing context, or explaining some kind of an emotion with a voice over. Lastly, the common sound in romance movies are slow songs. The songs provide a feeling within the viewers of nerves or "butterflies". After researching this genre I don't believe this is the one we would want to use for our project. What I would use would be the camera angles because they provide so much emotion for the viewers. Otherwise, there are many elements of the romance genre that do not appeal to this project. The sad feelings, the tension, the emotion and the music would all be absolutely horrible with our film. It simply would not look good or match the idea of our film. The filming shots could be associated with our film, however everything else simply cannot match with our project. Hopefully the next genre will be the one!
