Genre Research (Thriller)
The research behind the Thriller genre has led me to believe that this genre could have been our genre, however it doesn't match all the credentials. I began by researching the different types of camera work used in thriller movies, the most used angles are Canted Angle shots, Close-Ups, Two-Shots, Wide-Angle Shots and Mid Shots. Thrillers typically use these different camera techniques to bring out elements of suspense and tension. These filming angles also highlight the actions and fears of the actors when being approached by the antagonist. Different types of camera angles show different scenes, there are some for chaotic scenes, sad scenes, and the calm opening scenes. These camera angles create lots of fear and suspense which is exactly what the producers are looking for. In Thriller movies there are also completely different Technical Elements, costumes, props and settings, lightings, and sounds. Conventionally, the characters have a completely different attire in thriller movies than normal ones. In thrillers, the costumes typically are dirty, messy, old, etc. Props and settings in these movies are different as well, the settings most of the time are old and dirty to create suspense and a bad energy for the viewers, therefore causing a fear factor for the viewers. The editing in thriller movies is typically very fast and noticeable, there are many jumpcuts for jumpscares and there are so many elements that have to be included to make the perfect thriller. In thriller movies, they include background sound effects to raise viewers out of their seats and voiceovers to provide a dramatic effect. Some examples of the films I researched were Bird Box, The Conjuring and Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark. In all of these movies, the editing, scenery, and angles were the same and provided the same suspense in the viewer. There are many things we loved about this genre such as the feeling of suspense, the costumes, the scenery, and the camera shots. These elements of the Thriller genre can be implemented into our project. We can grab our viewers attention by using these common elements so that we can have an attention grabbing film. However, with the thriller genre, it is very commonly used. The concept behind Ella and I's movie was wanting to have a different film than everyone else's so that it would stick out. If we do use the thriller genre, our movie will not be much different to everyone else's and there will be no attention grasp. Some things about the Thriller genre that we didn't like were the sounds, and the editing. Everything besides for that could be used to make our movie great.
